Requirements for Gi and No-Gi Divisions

Gi Requirements

  • Gis should be made using cotton or cotton-like material. It should not be so thick or hard that it would be difficult for opponent to grip. It is mandatory for the gi to be manufactured with woven fabric.
  • EVA is permitted inside the collar.
  • Gis must be completely white, royal blue or black. Male athletes are not allowed to wear shirts beneath their gi.
  • In female divisions, athletes must use stretch or elastic shirt that hugs her body underneath the gi.
  • Protective gear including: Cups, Groin Protectors, Foot Pads, Head Gear, Hair Pins, Eye Protectors, or any other equipment made of hard material that may cause injury to an opponent or athlete is forbidden.
  • In adult black belt divisions, event organizer may require athletes to have two gis of different colors to distinguish between the two competitors.
  • Gis may not have any tears, be wet, dirty or have an unpleasant odor.
  • The gi top should reach down to the athlete thigh and the sleeves should not be shorter than 5 cm from the wrist when the arm is parallel to the ground.
  • Gi pants should not go above 5 cm from the ankle bone. Males are not allowed to wear pants of any kind under the gi pants. Females are allowed to use elastic fabric pants under the gi as long as they are shorter the gi pants.
  • Athletes must wear a belt 4 to 5 cm in width and be colored according to his/her rank with a black tip (except black belts than the tip should be white or red). The belt must be worn over the top of the gi jacket. Wrapped around the waist twice and tied in a knot. Once tied, each belt end should be 20 to 30 cm in length.
  • Painted gis are illegal unless the paint is designed in a logo for an academy or sponsor. Even in this case, the paint must not mark his/her opponent’s gi or they will be required to change their gi.
  • An official gi inspector will check all gis prior to weigh ins to make sure they comply with the rules.
  • Athletes must not change their gis for their first match after they have been inspected. After the first match, athletes may request permission to change and undergo a new inspection. If they refuse to comply with these rules, the athlete will be disqualified.

No-Gi Requirements

Youth (ages 4-17 years)
  • Youth competitors may wear any color shorts and any color elastic shirt.
Men
  • Board Shorts must be black, white, or black with white, and may contain up to 50% of the athlete’s belt rank color.
  • No pockets, buttons, snaps, plastic or metal pieces will be allowed.
  • The length should be longer than mid-thigh but not go below the knee.
  • Pants, shorts, or trunks of elastic material (compression type) are permitted as long as they are the color black and worn underneath regulation board shorts.
  • Shirts must be elastic and be long enough to cover the waistline of shorts.
  • Shirts must be black, white, or black with white and contain at least 10% of the athlete’s rank color.
  • Shirts that are 100% the color of the rank the athlete belongs to are also acceptable
Women
  • Women must wear shorts or pants that are black, white, or black with white, and may contain up to 50% of the athletes rank color.
  • The shorts or pants must be made of elastic fabric, contain no pockets, buttons, snaps or any plactic/metal pieces.
  • Shorts should be at least long enough to touch mid-thigh but not go below the knee.
  • Shirts must be elastic and be long enough to cover the waistline of shorts. Shirts must be black, white, or black with white and contain at least 10% of the athlete’s rank color.
  • Shirts that are 100% the color of the rank the athlete belongs to are also acceptable
